Helicopter crashes into California home, at least 3 dead

Los Angeles, Jan 31 Three people were killed when a tour and flight-training helicopter crashed into a house in coastal southern California today, witnesses and emergency personnel said. The crash was reported around 1:45 Egret Court and Shearwater Place in the Bay View Terrace community.

A piece of the helicopter was seen on the roof of a home across the street from where it landed.

The John Wayne Airport confirmed the Robinson 44 helicopter had four passengers on board when it crashed just one mile southeast of the airport. They were home at the time, but in a back room and were not injured, she said. Officials in the Orange County neighborhood are advising the public to avoid the area of the Bristol/Jamboree exit of the 73 freeway.

The helicopter's occupants were being assessed and transported for treatment, Newport Beach police said.

A neighbour who witnessed the crash told local television that he saw three people in the wreckage, and the pilot lying injured on grass near the aircraft.

No further details were immediately available.
