Two killed in crash involving Amtrak train, freight train

It is reported that minimum 2 people have lost their lives and more than 70 passengers are injured.

Amtrak said a train going between NY and Miami "came in contact" with a CSX freight train at about 2:35 Sunday morning.

The crash caused the lead engine and several passenger cars to derail, officials said. It happened around 2:30 in the morning, so numerous passengers were sleeping, including Erin Witman, who spoke to MSNBC.

The state's governor said 116 people were taken to hospital with injuries following the crash which happened at 2.30am local time (7.30am in the UK).

Sumwalt says investigators don't know if the signals further up the line indicated the track had been switched off the main route. "That's subject to verification".

The two victims were later identified as Amtrak personnel. CSX maintains all of the tracks and signal systems. However, the switch on those tracks was not in the correct position, thus causing the collision.

Palmetto Health spokeswoman Tammie Epps says 62 passengers were seen at three of its hospitals.

"Currently, there is one patient that is in critical condition, there are two others that are in serious and a few others that are now being evaluated for possible serious conditions", he said. Still others are being evaluated for serious conditions.

Lexington Medical Center said it received 27 patients, most with minor injuries. Most were treated for cuts and bruises and released. Two of those passengers were admitted. The spill does not represent a threat to the public, the spokesperson said. Last week, an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to a retreat in West Virginia collided with a garbage truck.
