Van Dijk says he can handle scrutiny after £75m transfer

Once Van Dijk finds his best physical shape, he is expected to carry Liverpool's defense alongside one of Lovren, Matip, and Ragnar Klavan.

'Everybody can say what they want but I am working hard every day and I am getting back to where I need to be with the help of everyone here. But I know that as a team we did very well against one of the best strikers in Europe.

Van Dijk was then questioned for his displays in Liverpool's shock defeats by Swansea in the Premier League and West Brom in the FA Cup before being involved in the penalty fiasco on Sunday against Tottenham. You are always going to be judged but it is not like it is something really unusual at the moment.

Van Dijk swapped Southampton for Liverpool in a record-breaking deal at the beginning of January and the Netherlands worldwide has experienced a mixed start to life at Anfield.

Carragher agrees with that, believing he does not look in peak condition just yet, although he insists he will eventually prove good business.

"He (Carragher) needs to come into the dressing room and he can see if I need to lose some weight because I don't think I need to lose some weight!"

'Everybody is going to watch the bad things and that is how it is.

"Obviously, there are so many eyes on me but I am just keeping my head down and playing".

"I know because I made such a big step right now, for a lot of money, everything is going to analysed".

"It is a strength of mine to not really bother too much when people have their opinions, especially negative opinions".

"The football we play, the pressing, the different options with players, it is totally different", the defender continued.

Talking about the game with Huddersfield, Van Dijk approved the manager's not to include him in the first-team, stating that he still has to adapt and earn his starting spot. Maybe they can boo the whole game, ' said Van Dijk. I made the decision, I have enjoyed every bit of it and I am very grateful for everything that they (Southampton) did for me. I am going there with only one mindset and that is to win.
