Tom Holland, Emma Thompson Join Robert Downey Jr. in 'Doctor Dolittle'

Past year we told you that a new Dr. Dolittle film starring Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., was officially in the works.

Not much is known about the newest iteration of the long-running character, but the film is being directed by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), and will be produced by Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Susan Downey. Gaghan also rewrote the script from a Tom Sheppard draft. Also joining the cast in a live action role is Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen, who is still in talks to join the film.

As it happens, The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle isn't Gomez's first time voice acting.

Other actors voicing animals include Downey's onscreen protege in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland, as well as Emma Thompson and Ralph Fiennes. The singer and actress has a lot on her plate, following her executive producer duties on Netflix's teen suicide series 13 Reasons Why. The cameras should be rolling later this month in London with Universal eyeing an April 2019 release date. If you're not familiar with the charmed doctor, he's a veterinarian who has the ability to understand and speak to animals, created by children's book author Hugh Lofting in the 1920s.

The character has a rich movie legacy, with the 1967 musical Doctor Dolittle winning the Oscars for best original song and visual effects.

Dolittle's nemesis, Banderas, stars as Picasso in the latest season of the National Geographic series Genius.

90s kids will undoubtedly remember growing up with the Dr. Dolittle films that starred comedian Eddie Murphy. Sheen (Masters of Sex, Midnight in Paris) will play a character called Mudfly, who will operate as a sort of sidekick to Downey's Doctor Dolittle.
