However, Sport say Chelsea want a long-term solution to help the Blues to secure a top four finish this term and then start a new long-term project in the summer.

But it still seems unlikely the former Spain global will come to Chelsea's rescue should they ditch Conte before the end of the season.

"The arguments Conte is having with the board, essentially telling them to sack him if they aren't happy with the job he's doing, will have a detrimental effect on the players - whether he's right or not", Ince, speaking to Paddy Power, said.

"I think the Chelsea fans would welcome that if truth be known".

'Conte won't like this, but he needs to take a leaf out of Mourinho's book and turn the focus of discussions back onto football.

The defending champions are already 19 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City and just one ahead of fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table after 26 games.

Ince, though, says Conte knew what he was getting himself into when he joined the club. Why would they go to Chelsea over United or City?

The Spaniard won the Champions League, two La Liga titles and three Copa Del Reys during three years at the Nou Camp and, according to Sport, Chelsea believe that he could be the ideal fit to lead the west Londoners.

'Besides, the club backed him in the summer with £58million on Alvaro Morata, who has been hit and miss, and hardly a successful signing.

"Plus Chelsea have spent more than £200million on new players this season, adding to a title-winning squad". The future for the Italian manager looks bleak with Barcelona waiting in the Champions League Round of 16 and Conte may have to face the axe as his predecessor's Jose Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas if the desired results aren't matched.

Napoli's Maurizio Sarri and former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique are now the leading candidates to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea, but any change is still not expected to occur until the summer.
