Apple HomePod: 3 business uses for the smart speaker

Apple's * a href="*sQYf8&subid=0&offerid=492045.1&type=10&tmpid=13127&" *HomePod is $349 and available for purchase on February 9, but it looks like preorder supplies have run out, but that's always debatable.

And it is "spatially aware", Apple's fancy way of saying that the speaker senses the environment you place it in and adapts accordingly in seconds, using an accelerometer, Apple's A8 chip, and an array of six microphones. Apple is betting big that they will.

Furthermore, the HomePod is strictly compatible with other Apple products only.

There's also the thing with Apple's tendency to lock its products inside its own ecosystem.

Zhang says it's also possible the rumored 6.5-inch "iPhone X Plus" could include an Apple Pencil.

Recode: "HomePod has what can only be explained by the most balanced audio, not just of any smart speaker but of any speaker I now own, which includes a number of Sonos speakers and a Bose Home Theatre system", said Recode's Ben Bajarin. The speakers aren't the best, but they work enough for me to cook dinner or do the dishes too. If you don't take the HomePod into your nearest Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider, the Cupertino firm will send you a shipping box instead. As someone with a cat who does enjoy testing her claws on furniture, the fact that - unlike with Amazon's latest Echo or Google's Home - you can't remove the HomePod's fabric cover yourself and swap it for a new one is a little ominous. When do you think Apple might release the final build?

Siri's limitations continue: It can't make calls, tell you what's on your calendar for the day, set more than one timer at once or order an Uber (or Domino's Pizza) like you can on competing smart speakers.

Apple's HomePod is roughly three times more expensive than the leading competitor and isn't capable of doing what others can. This is especially so when compared to the Google Assistant, which is integrated in the Google Home Max. With many speakers and sound systems, there is a zone of perfection. At times, not only did HomePod respond, but so did Siri on my nearby iPhone. "We made you a playlist", Sonos said in the tweet. You bring your iPhone or other iOS device near HomePod and are prompted on the phone screen to choose the room where you are placing the speaker, and that automatically transfers your existing iCloud, iTunes and Apple Music settings.

Even with the volume up high, Siri will hear your voice over the music.
