Hans Leitert Does This - Jurgen Klopp Explains Liverpool Goalkeeping Specialist's Role

Van Dijk followed in the footsteps of Liverpool teammates Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane by swapping St Mary's Stadium for Anfield last month and is set to play against his former club for the first time since his transfer this weekend.

During his pre-match press conference at Melwood on Friday, Klopp was asked about the reception he expects the Dutchman to receive from the home crowd.

Last summer, Reds officials were forced to publicly apologise to Southampton abandon their original pursuit of Van Dijk amid accusations of "tapping up". "With other players I didn't talk about it because I didn't know or look where they were coming from".

"It is not the most lucky season and of course there is a kind of frustration in him", said the Reds boss. We are all human beings. It won't be a normal game. It was a special story for him - really positive, then at the end, not really positive.

He said: "We wanted for all the boys - including Alberto Moreno, but he couldn't play, he had a little problem - to have match time".

"When we played football, we all did a few things we weren't proud of". I don't think so.

"Every single person has an opinion about everybody, and we have to respect that, but I think our fans are really respectful with ex-players".

"We think about the football game, and not avoid situations". I don't think anyone at Southampton will say we've stolen him or something.

Klopp also complimented the Southampton club for the work they do in nurturing players who have since gone on to join Liverpool.

Relations between player and club soured further when he was perceived to have downed tools as the Saints held out for more cash, the club fining him two weeks' wages for refusing to train - an allegation Van Dijk denied.

"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is obviously from there, he took a different way, and Theo Walcott as well".

Klopp highlighted their academy and went on to joke: "Maybe we should have a scouting department directly in Southampton!". They will want to show their quality but we have our own targets.
