The two injured deputies were Michael Corley and Ralph Sidwell "Sid" Callaway, both with the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities confirmed a Locust Grove police officer, along with the suspected shooter, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the shootings. The city's mayor said the 26-year-old Maddox left behind a wife who is pregnant and expecting their second child any day.

A police officer died Friday after being shot in Locust Grove, Georgia, just south of Atlanta.

Eight other law enforcement officers have died of gunfire this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. He said the Locust Grove officer who was killed had been on the force for about five years.

McBrayer said one deputy was in serious condition and undergoing surgery, and had been hit below the bullet-proof vest. GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the suspect's relatives were being notified before his name is released. A suspect, who hasn't been named by authorities, was killed.

Price said Maddox is the only officer they're ever hired straight out of school.

Images on local television showed police tape around two homes in a cul-de-sac of a Locust Grove subdivision, about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the slain officer as Locust Grove Officer Chase Maddox.
