More ice and snow forecast for this weekend

More snow and ice warnings have been issued for the United Kingdom, as forecasters warn the country's chilly weather could last all month.

The Met Office issued a second yellow "be prepared" warning for ice in the east Midlands, London and south-east England, Wales, and the west Midlands.

The chief forecaster said: "Rain and hill snow, accompanied by some strong winds, is expected through Saturday evening, clearing eastwards overnight".

Wintry showers at all levels are expected later today, possibly resulting in slight accumulations. Rain is likely to turn heavier later on in the day.

A separate warning for ice runs concurrently until 9am on Friday, with injuries from slips and falls possible.

People are urged to take care on journeys and allow extra time, and to also dress appropriately for the conditions.

MORE weather warnings have been issued as winter weather returns to Scotland this weekend.

Heavy snow showers are expected to follow on from a spell of rain, sleet and hill snow late on Thursday, forecasters said.

Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in those areas and are not expected to reach much higher than 4C or 5C in the south of England.

Spokesman Cllr Martin Tett said: "Highway teams are monitoring high-tech weather forecasts with highly-trained staff on standby around the clock".
