Woman found holding her own gouged-out eyeballs near SC church

A 20-year-old SC woman was taken to a hospital on Tuesday after she was discovered holding at least one of her eyeballs outside of a church in Anderson. The cause for alarm was a 19-year-old woman kneeling at nearby train tracks, gouging out her eye with her hands.

"When I got close enough and they were able to get her stabilized and on a stretcher, I realized then that it was awful and that she had done something that's going to traumatize her life forever", Hiott said. The church worker claims the February 6 incident was so shocking a 911 dispatcher didn't believe her story at first.

Anderson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a church Tuesday morning after receiving a report that a woman was holding her eyeball.

He said the woman looked young, and tried to fight anyone who tried to help her.

Hiott said that the 911 dispatcher didn't seem to initially believe what Hiott was telling her.

Anderson County Sheriff, Chad McBride, said it took several people to subdue her. The teen was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment and will reportedly be tested to see if drugs played a role in the horrific act.

The sheriff's office told the Associated Press that since no crime was committed, no charges will be filed in the incident.

She added that the church held a debriefing to counsel those who had seen what happened.

"When I got close enough and they were able to get her stabilized and on a stretcher, I realized then that it was awful and that she had done something that's going to traumatize her life forever", Hiott said.
