Israeli Guard Stabbed, Palestinian Assailant Killed In West Bank Attack

A Palestinian assailant was shot dead on Wednesday after stabbing a security guard at the entrance to a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military said.

A Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli forces this morning near an illegal settlement north of occupied Hebron.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Hamza Zamareh, from Halhul, according to Palestinian security sources.

The Israeli army claimed in a statement that a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli security guard in the Karmei Tzur settlement near Halhoul before another guard shot him dead.

The man, who is reportedly in his forties, was attacked near the entrance of the Ariel settlement and is now in critical condition, Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency agency, said in a statement. Another security guard shot and killed the attacker, the military said in a statement.

No further details were immediately available on the identity of the Palestinian.

Ben-Gal's alleged attacker was not apprehended in the Nablus operation, during which about 500 Palestinians hurled rocks, fire bombs and explosive devices and fired live rounds at the soldiers, the military said.

Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, claimed Jarrar as a member and welcomed the January 9 attack in which Shevach was shot dead in what Israeli media said was a hail of 22 bullets.

Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip mostly use the Israeli shekel, Jordanian dinar, and US dollar, and have complained that their economy is too intertwined with Israel's.

Israeli forces earlier on Tuesday stormed Nablus, provoking Palestinian youths to take to the streets.

Last month the PLO's Central Council voted to suspend recognition of Israel following President Donald Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

A Fatah spokesman, Osama Qawassmeh, said that death of Jarrar, who was killed in a shootout with the IDF, was "a type of field execution" and an Israeli "crime" that violated global law.

Israeli settlements are seen as illegal under worldwide law and a major obstacle to peace as they are built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state.
