Murdered Richardson police officer identified, suspect arrested

The Richardson police officer was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance at the Breckinridge Point Apartments about 20 miles outside Dallas on Wednesday night, the Morning News reported.

"He exemplified the professionalism, heroism and strong character inherent in all Richardson police officers", the department posted on Facebook. Witnesses said McCall shouted "I'm sorry" as he was taken into custody hours later. Police say the 30-year-old lived in the apartment where McCall held police at bay and that he knew the accused gunman. He worked for the police department for more than a dozen years and was the married father of two daughters.

Upon entry to the apartment, the suspect began firing on the officers, striking Sherrard, Spivey told reporters. The 27-year-old officer was shot in the neck, according to CBS DFW.

Police said the incident began about 7 p.m. Sherrard was taken to a hospital in Plano after he was shot. Online jail records don't indicate an attorney for him.

While some officers provided first aid to that individual, who later died, an investigation led others to a nearby apartment. They said the man found by officers at the scene has died.

A police spokesman said the conditions of the officer and the civilian weren't known.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted out his condolences.
