US Soccer Vice President Carlos Cordeiro Elected to Top Spot

Hope Solo used her time at the mic during the U.S. Soccer's 2018 Annual General Meeting Saturday to deliver a passionate speech in support of change and equal pay between the men's and women's national teams.

Cordeiro was considered an establishment candidate after having served as former president Sunil Gulati's second in command, but former players had his back instead of recent US team members like Solo, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino. Now, he's charged, among other things, with running the US end of a bid with Mexico and Canada for the right to host the 2026 World Cup.

Michael Bradley and Christian Pulisic of the U.S. men's national team react to their loss against Trinidad and Tobago during the FIFA World Cup Qualifier on October 10, 2017.

He reiterated the ultimate goal is to help soccer realize its vast potential in the United States.

"I think we are at an inflection point in soccer history in this country", he remarked after his victory.

"To those of you who didn't vote for me, I'm going to work to earn your support and trust over the next four years", he said. "Thank you very much".

Cordeiro clinched election on the third ballot, where he easily eclipsed the 50 percent threshold, winning 69 percent of the vote.

The election received significantly more attention than in past years where Gulati typically ran without an opponent, likely because of the failed qualifying bid and a field of eight hopeful candidates. MLS, as well as the National Women's Soccer League and United Soccer League, shifted their support to Cordeiro after the second ballot. Solo said Carter refused to furnish USA senators with a breakdown of breakdown of revenue for the men's and women's national teams she refused. "A vote for either one of them is a vote for the status quo, disunity, discord and more failure". "Today, the status quo is unacceptable", he said. He is a lifelong soccer fan who immigrated to the U.S.at age 15 and became a citizen 10 years later. This vote comes down to one simple question: "Who can actually deliver that change?"

Outside of soccer, Cordeiro has spent more than three decades as a business executive. Gulati will retain a role as a member of the USSF board and the Federation Internationale de Football Association executive council, and as chairman of the North American bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

He had received 36 percent and 42 percent respectively on the first two ballots, where he was involved in a tight battle with Kathy Carter, the on-leave president of Major League Soccer's marketing arm.

The Athlete Council, which comprised 20 percent of the overall vote, was instrumental in getting Cordeiro elected, lining up as a bloc to give him a critical boost of early momentum that allowed him to be the top vote-getter in each round.

To win election, Cordeiro needed a majority of the weighted vote.

Solo, a candidate who was advocating change and who cast Cordeiro as an establishment figure, made her dissatisfaction with the Athlete Council's decision clear.

Caligiuri withdrew after receiving less than 1 percent on the first ballot. It was the youth, the adult, the athletes and the professionals. "I think we have an opportunity to really transform it into a number one sport".
