Westerville Police say two officers killed Saturday; suspect injured

The City of Westerville (OH) has confirmed that two police officer were killed Saturday while responding to a call in Westerville, the home of Ohio Governor John Kasich.

Officers responded to a 911 hang-up around 11:30 a.m. and were fired on when they arrived at the address.

Morelli had served on the force for 29 years, while Joering had been with Westerville police for 16 years. Sadly, he died shortly thereafter.

"These were two of the best we have". "This was their calling and they did it right".

The citizens of Westerville have been deeply moved by this loss and are laying flowers on the steps of Westerville Police Headquarters.

Two police officers were killed during an afternoon shooting in Ohio Saturday, the latest deaths in a year that has seen a steady stream of cop fatalities in its first few weeks. I have spoken with Westerville city leaders and pledged the full assistance of the Ohio Highway Patrol in any way they need.
