Yoel Romero misses weight on first try for UFC 221

Romero vs. Rockhold is mired in a cloud of uncertainty, as top UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero was well off the mark at Friday's weigh-in, which took place in Perth, Australia.

Yoel Romero missed weight for his UFC middleweight title clash against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 and is therefore not eligible for the belt.

Rockhold (16-3) is coming off a second-round TKO win against David Branch in September. He has won six of his last seven bouts.

Rockhold was initially set to take on Australian champion Robert Whittaker for a crack at the middleweight belt.

In the co-main event, two risky heavyweights will square off, with Curtis Blaydes (8-1, 1 No-Contest) and Mark Hunt (13-11-1, 1 NC) combining for 17 knockouts among 21 wins between them.

MMA fans have wanted to see this fight since both men were signed to the UFC in 2013.

The 26-year-old from Chicago is a -170 favorite on the UFC 221 odds against his 43-year-old opponent.

- Mark Hunt, who faced off with Brock Lesnar back at UFC 200 and lost a decision that was overturned to a no-contest after Lesnar failed his drug test, will leave the UFC upon the completion of his current deal. Flyweight Jussier Formiga was just over the 126lb max for his fight against Ben Nguyen, and while dropping the towel didn't get him to where he needed to be, he was given two hours to make weight, which he did.
