Miami Catholic School Teacher Fired For Marrying Same-Sex Partner

Miami Catholic School Teacher Fired For Marrying Same-Sex Partner

A letter was sent from the school to parents, on Thursday, but it failed to go into detail as to why Morffi was sacked.

Jocelyn Morffi returned to work at Sts.

"She is the Mother Theresa of teachers, she has made such a big contribution to this school", said parent Samantha Mills. Miami Archdiocese spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta confirmed Morffi lost her job, but only advised that she "violated her contract".

For Morffi, who couldn't be reached for comment, the firing was the result of a one-two punch from a religious institution that has drawn a line in the sand against same-sex marriage and a county that doesn't forbid religious institutions from terminating employees who come out as gay or lesbian.

"They're crucifying this teacher for her sexual preference", said parent Cintia Cini.

Ms Morffi shared the shocking news on social media and said that the Catholic school did not approve of her marrying a woman and did not think she was "the right kind of Catholic for my choice in partner". However, a few days later, she said that decision resulted in her being terminated from her position as a first grade teacher at Sts. "Peter and Paul Catholic School on Thursday, the day after she returned from her wedding in the Florida Keys", The Miami Herald reported. However, some parents are fuming with the school's decision and organised a protest demanding to know why Morffi was sacked, but say they still haven't been given a satisfactory reason.

Likewise, Florida law does not address discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment.

"As a teacher in a Catholic school their responsibility is partly for the spiritual growth of the children", Agosta continues. In the contract are policies, procedures, teaching and the traditions of the Catholic church. It says the decision to fire her was hard, but necessary. "If something along the way does not continue to stay within that contract, then we have no other choice". She was not given a reason for the termination, Reyes-Gutierrez said.

'You know, to be a Catholic, you're taught to be forgiving.

Morffi's attorney told WPLG they are considering the next legal steps they can take. She just does everything in love.

"We send our kids here because we want them to learn messages of love and I truly believe that Jesus's message is about love, compassion and acceptance and this is the opposite and that's very upsetting", said parent Rochelle Martin. She never imposes her personal beliefs on others.

'This is really bad, ' said Simon.
