'Parties must unite to push for Andhra special status'

Sources said that on Friday, before the Finance Minister's reply to the debate on the Union Budget in the Upper House, Chairperson Venkaiah Naidu had called a meeting with Chowdary, Jaitley and Shah as continued protests by the TDP MPs had marred House proceedings.

Earlier, TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu blasted the central government for "neglecting" Andhra Pradesh in the Union Budget 2018-19.

The BJP hit back and challenged the TDP to prove if the facts and figures listed in the status report were wrong. On its part, the TDP too brought out a 28-page counter document to suggest "nothing substantial" had been given to AP in the last four years except the "routine" Central grants that any other state would get. "Dear leaders of AP, Focus on state's development and keep politics aside", Rao said. It will now convene on 5 March, for the second half of the Budget Session. The issue also figured in the Rajya Sabha.

Speaker Mahajan then adjourned the House for the day.

"There were several commitments which were made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act in this House and before the state government and some of them have been implemented, some work is in progress".

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for almost a month-long recess amid protests by Andhra Pradesh members demanding more central assistance for the state.

The Lok Sabha adjourned on Friday for nearly a month-long recess amid unrelenting protests by Andhra Pradesh MPs demanding more central assistance for the state and Congress members raising questions about the Rafale aircraft deal.

The President of Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi also made use of this opportunity (rift between TDP and BJP) by tweeting - "The Congress Party supports the just demands of the people of Andhra Pradesh for special category status and speedy completion of the Polavaram project".

The BJP on Saturday said it was in talks with angry ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to sort out demands over allocation of funds to Andhra Pradesh under the State Reorganisation Act.

Supporting the demand of special category status, Gandhi has urged all political parties to unite for ensuring justice to the state.
