'Unprovoked Attack' Results in US Military Killing 100 Syrian Soldiers

About 500 pro-regime troops "initiated an unprovoked attack" against a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) headquarters, where U.S. coalition advisors were working with the U.S. -backed fighters, according to statement from U.S. Central Command.

The Syrian government on Thursday blasted deadly US-led coalition air strikes on pro-regime forces in the country's east as a "war crime".

Syrian state news outlet SANA said those killed were primarily battling the Islamic State, although it admitted an attack against the SDF took place.

Syria has described an overnight strike by the US-led coalition as a "war crime" and called for the coalition to be dismantled.

The US-led anti-ISIS coalition bombarded Syrian Arab Army and allied pro-government forces in the province of Deir Ezzor killing many army officers on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.

CNN also reported that HIMARS and MQ-9 drones were used in the attack.

About 2000 U.S. forces remain on the ground in Syria, allied to the Kurdish-led SDF alliance.

The Democratic Syrian Forces which are backed by the United States military control the Eastern side while the regime led by Bashar-al-Assad controls the western side of the valley.

He said U.S. and Russian military officers spoke by telephone before and during the confrontation, and there is no indication the aggressors included Russian forces or a militia operating under Russian influence or control. The offensive was described by US Army Col. Thomas Veale, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, as a coordinated attack against the USA -backed forces.

"You read that right: Russian forces (most likely mercenaries/Wagner division guys who also fought in Ukraine) were killed".

Now that the common goal of clearing out IS militants from Syria is nearly realized, Damascus and its allies have repeatedly threatened war against USA troops if they don't leave the country.

"We suspect Syrian pro-regime forces were attempting to seize terrain SDF had liberated from Daesh in September 2017", an official said.

The closer the USA gets to its original goal in Syria of defeating the Islamic State group, the murkier its end game. It also said it was aware only of 25 Syrian militia members having been wounded in the U.S. strikes.

Meanwhile, the United States quickly tried to put down fears that the nation could be involved in a larger conflict in Syria. It also accused the US of carrying out a brutal massacre and committing war crimes.
