Giants to hire Mike Shula as offensive coordinator, report says

Shula spent seven seasons total with the Panthers, working his first two in 2011-12 as the team's quarterbacks coach. The Giants' offense also should have a ton of weapons, from a healthy Odell Beckham Sterling Shepard to Evan Engram and more, at Manning's disposal. "Very basic", ESPN analyst Louis Riddick said after Shula was sacked by the Panthers.

Shula, whose father is the legendary former Colts and Dolphins coach Don Shula, and Shumur have not previously worked together.

The Giants have looked to General Manager Dave Gettleman's last stop to fill a key position on head coach Pat Shurmur's coaching staff.

Going back further in the coaches' careers, in fact, Shurmur coached Donovan McNabb and a younger Foles in Philadelphia, and Shula developed a young David Garrard in Jacksonville.

Shula's play-calling was criticized in Carolina, but that won't be an issue with the Giants because Shurmur plans to call the plays.

But make no mistake, this will not be Shula's offense. But the Vikings denied New York's request to interview Stefanski, which National Football League teams can do for assistant coaches under contract as long as they aren't interviewing for a head-coach position. This is Shumur's offense, with input from his offensive assistants.

Under Shula's watch, Carolina's offense failed to find its rhythm this past season after leading the league in scoring in 2015.

Shurmur indicated that he planned to hire an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach, but he clearly believes Shula is capable of handling both roles.

Shula's connection to Gettleman likely helped him land on his feet rather quickly in NY. The Giants were terrible last season, finishing 3-13. The success of Shurmur and Shula's tenures will ultimately depend on how they groom Eli Manning's successor. That shouldn't be a problem.

Shula's relationship with Newton certainly had its ups and downs. He's respected and liked by his pupils.

"We've won a lot of games when we've had a good rushing average and good rushing efficiency, but I would say that's going to come with balance and is more important with balance", Shula told the Panthers' team site last month prior to Carolina's playoff loss to New Orleans. Shurmur had Marc Bulger in St. Louis (2009), and Shula had Trent Dilfer in Tampa (1996-99).
