Arvinder Singh Lovely returns to Congress

Arvinder Singh Lovely returns to Congress

In what could be perceived as a major jolt to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a former leader with Congress, Arvinder Singh Lovely, who had joined hands with the ruling BJP party and was saffronised at least nine months back had made a U-turn and joined his old Congress party on Saturday morning.

Lovely had joined the BJP in April past year, who had raked up allegations of bribery in ticket distribution for the MCD polls by the Congress and asserted after meeting chief Amit Shah that many senior Congress leaders were feeling "suffocated" as the party is no longer what it was used to be.

Lovely met Rahul Gandhi on Saturday along with current Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken and chose to return to the Congress. "Joining the BJP was not a happy decision".

A popular leader, Lovely had joined the BJP ahead of last year's civic polls in the capital.

Lovely, a popular face in Delhi's political circles, was a minister in the Sheila Dikshit government and held important portfolios such as education and tourism.

Speaking at a press conference after his re-entry, Lovely said his decision to leave the party and join BJP was taken at a moment of emotional weakness. Congress leader Ajay Maken confirmed the news. Maken and Dikshit's newfound bonhomie is part of this perception building. Lovely, a Congress heavyweight was an MLA from east Delhi's Gandhinagar and was known to have bolstered the party's performance in the East Delhi parliamentary constituency that was represented by Dikshit's son, Sandeep, for two terms. Former Delhi minister Haroon Yusuf was also present.

"Mere liye koi khushi ka nirnay(leaving Congress, joining BJP) nahitha". Now the party's social media head, Kanth said people like "Lovely" were hungry for power. He felt he was an "ideological misfit" in the saffron party.
