Five dead in Russian Federation church shooting; suspect killed by police

The attacker was "eliminated " by police fire, the statement added.

A shooting in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan has left 5 women dead and at least 4 people wounded.

Four others were also injured in the shooting, Russia's interior ministry said. Two officers were injured in the gunfight, they said.

Russian news agencies said the attack occurred as churchgoers celebrated Maslenitsa, a Christian holiday marking the last day before Lent, according to the eastern Orthodox calendar.

"We had finished the mass and were beginning to leave the church". The gunman, who was carrying a hunting rifle, bullets and a knife, was killed.

It is often the scene of attacks, some claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.

Initial reports suggest all five victims of the attack in the town of roughly 50,000 people are women.

The death toll of the attack was bumped up from four to five.

The gunman targeted worshippers at a Russian Orthodox church in the mainly Muslim region, although no motive has been established yet.

Images published by the local press showed the body of a bearded man dressed in military fatigues who was identified as the assailant.

Russian President Vladimir Putin fired, three months ago, head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov and appointed Vladimir Vasilyev.
