Russian Federation vetoes UK-drafted resolution targeting Iran

The Security Council's Panel of Experts earlier determined that Iranian-origin weapons had been introduced into Yemen after the United Nations -embargo went into effect and that Tehran has failed to take the necessary measures to prevent the transfer of ballistic missiles, other military equipment and unmanned aerial vehicles to the country.

Iran accused the US and United Kingdom of being "the major military supporters of the war of aggression against Yemen".

Tehran, meanwhile, said it "categorically rejects" all the allegations around its supposed arms supplies to Houthi rebels in Yemen, calling the UK-submitted draft an attempt to deflect attention from the "catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen", caused by the Saudi-led coalition bombings.

Bolivia joined Russian Federation in voting against the measure while China and Kazakhstan abstained.

For its part, Russian Federation insisted it could not consent to a draft resolution that it said "will inevitably escalate regional tensions".

But on February 26, Nebenzya said the USA conclusion that Iran had supplied the rebels was "uncorroborated" and he said the evidence "requires verification and discussions within the sanctions committee" before the United Nations council can act on it.

The British-drafted resolution against Iran at the UN Security Council over the Yemen conflict would be helping the "aggressors", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday, slamming the British government for its "dishonest" behavior.

It came in response to a report prepared by a United Nations panel of experts, which found that missiles fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels at Saudi Arabia a year ago were made in Iran.

The council then put to vote the Russian-drafted text, which won unanimous support of the 15 members of the council. "Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Nikki Haley, the USA permanent representative to the UN.

"Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Haley, who was traveling to Honduras.

"The Russian Federation can not support the draft resolution proposed by our British colleagues for the extension for the mandate of the panel of experts of Security Council committee 2140 and sanctions against Yemen", Nebenzia said.

Khoshroo went on to say that there is no military solution to the crisis in Yemen, adding that Iran believes in a political solution. While the panel accused Iran of flaunting the embargo by "failing to take the necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply", it fell short of identifying the supplier of the weapons.

"In spite of a mountain of credible, independent evidence showing Iran violated the Yemen arms embargo, resulting in a series of attacks on civilian targets, Russian Federation prevented accountability and endangered the entire region". Millions of people are on the brink of starvation and more than 22 million - nearly the entire population - are in need, according to humanitarian agencies.

The Security Council on Monday adopted a Russian-drafted resolution on a technical rollover of the Yemen sanctions regime.
