Meanwhile an orange warning is in effect for Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

With Louth County Council stopping snow plough and gritting operations, motorists are urged to stay off the road and remain indoors for their own safety in light of ongoing Status Red weather warnings.

Several people to be rescued from their cars after becoming trapped last night.

"Elsewhere any snow will turn to sleet and rain later this morning".

Heading into early next week, the rain is expected to continue, and while the majority of the snow has passed us by, the temperatures are still expected to dip to as low as -2 in places.

There's no Irish Rail, Dublin Bus or Luas services today - Bus Eireann won't operate in Leinster or Munster - but may run some services in other areas depending on the roads.

Appeals are also being made for people to check in on elderly neighbours and to report sightings of rough sleepers. It identified 21 people who needed shelter, six of whom were persuaded to access extreme cold weather shelter and one person who was accommodated in a garda station; 14 people refused access to shelter.
