Ichiro Suzuki to sign one-year deal with Seattle

The Mariners and Ichiro Suzuki are close to finalizing a one-year deal for the franchise icon to return to Seattle, according to multiple reports Monday.

The prospect emerged months after the 44-year-old former Mariner became a free agent after three seasons with the Miami Marlins and 17 total in the majors.

The Mariners are looking to add depth to their outfield with three of their top four outfielders now dealing with injury issues.

An injury to outfielder Ben Gamel - who suffered an oblique strain that will keep him sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks - could clear an opportunity with the Mariners for the 10-time All-Star. Seattle has already seen first baseman Ryon Healy (hand), outfielder Mitch Haniger (hand) and pitcher Felix Hernandez (bruised forearm) slowed by injuries during spring training.

Ichiro was the American League MVP and Rookie of the Year in his first season with the Mariners.

Ichiro holds the single-season Major League Baseball record of 262 hits, set in 2004.

Ichiro last played for the Mariners in 2012 before being traded mid-season to the New York Yankees.

Ichiro slashed.255/.318/.332 with 3 home runs and 20 RBI in 215 plate appearances with the Miami Marlins in 2017.
