BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe Is A New Take On Luxury

The four-door flagship of the new BMW 8 Series will roll onto the market - with and without the "M" emblem - in 2019, and its presence will secure new shares in the luxury segment of the market for the Munich brand.

We can also only offer educated guesses as to what the 8 Series and 8 Series Gran Coupe ranges will comprise, and here we expect a base 840i with a 3-litre turbo straight-six, an 850i with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and possibly an 860i with an iteration of the M760Li's 6.6-litre turbo V12 unit.

"The BMW 8 Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW line-up and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance", Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design said at the Geneva Motor Show.

"The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is created to stir things up, to polarise - it should move you emotionally", explains Domagoj Dukec, Vice President Design BMW M and BMW i. The long wheelbase, long bonnet, flowing roofline and short rear make for a sporty coupe-like shape, whereas the muscular arches let you know from afar that you're staring at a performance-oriented product.

BMW today showcased its latest 8 Series concept, which the Bavarian automaker describes as "polarising".

The BMW 8-Series coupe and convertible are expected to debut later this year.

This vehicle, moreover, represents "a new facet of luxury: extremely sporty, extravagant and polarizing", according to chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk.

The long wheelbase of the concept is nearly dwarfed by the large features of the front fascia, meant to communicate a sense of performance, with the sleek line of the greenhouse skipping the flat plane roof of the 7-Series.

The car's striking green paint job is called Sal ve Vert, and according to BMW, it can also appear grayish blue in different lights. In contrast, the gold-colored kidney surround brings an added air of exclusivity to the front end. The headlights are similar to those on the M8 GTE racer and there are carbon fibre air intakes to funnel air into the engine and to the brakes.
