Officer Shot to Death in Clinton is Identified

Officers found James E. Waters, 37, of Clinton, dead inside a home in Clinton Wednesday morning.

During the 911 call, officers heard two women screaming in the background.

Toliver said she could hear shots being fired from inside her home at around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities later found the suspect dead inside the home almost three hours after the shooting first broke out, according to the highway patrol.

The cause of his death is unclear.

Officers took a woman into custody at the scene.

Authorities did not identify the officer who was killed in the latest shooting incident but Lowe said he had been with the Clinton Police Department "for a while". In August, Officer Gary Michael was killed during a traffic stop.


He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and is survived by his parents and siblings.

Seven months to the day, people living in Clinton are reliving a nightmare after hearing another police officer was shot and killed. He returned to full-time duty last September, one month after another officer was fatally shot.

"It's just devastating", Henry County Sheriff Kent Oberkrom said. In one era, they are called warriors.

The shooter was reportedly barricaded inside the home.

Morton is the second Clinton police officer in the past year to be killed in the line of duty.

Sgt. Bill Lowe said that the deceased officer was with the department for three to four years, and recalled the death of another officer Michael who died in the line of duty. But the man continued shooting, wounding all the officers.

"It's just another tragic event for this community and this police department", Sgt. Lowe said.
