Elyounoussi reveals Guardiola praise as Arsenal reportedly join race for Basel star

Manchester City have reached only their second quarter-final but were left frustrated after losing at home for the first time since 2016 and means Guardiola's side suffered only their first home defeat in 37 games in all competitions.

Norway global Elyounoussi scored Basel's equaliser against City before going on to set up the victor for Michael Lang in the second half to cap a fine individual performance.

However, Mohamed Elyounoussi exposed some slack defending to smash in an equaliser for the visitors nine minutes later before Michael Lang rocketed home a spectacular victor past Claudio Bravo 19 minutes from time.

Wing back Michael Lang earned Basel its latest victory over a Premier League giant by smashing a rising shot inside the near post through goalkeeper Claudio Bravo's attempted save in the 71st.

"He was good", Guardiola was quoted as saying in the Metro.

83 - Eighty-three per cent of teams to have drawn 2-2 away in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie have progressed to the next round (10 out of 12).

"I hope that the politicians in prison can leave as soon as possible for their families", he said.

"He is a good player for the future". He has to grow up and make strong but the huge quality is there'.

The former Barcelona coach, however, had less positive words for the rest of his team, labelling their second-half performance as "really, really poor" and said their possession play had been largely pointless. At this point many expected the goals to flow in and for Basel to hold back in defense. Pep Guardiola is expected to make changes to his team and rest some key players, but we're still going to see a strong squad and you can not miss this one.

"We forgot to attack, we forgot to play, we passed the ball for the sake of passing the ball".

The Stockport-born midfielder made his City debut in November in the Champions League group match against Feyenoord and has since featured in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, including the final at Wembley where Arsenal were thumped 3-0. We tried and we spoke about that. "We've just won one title", he added.

"This season we have won a lot of games so we have more confidence and are at a more stable level". But after 1-1, it didn't happen.

"I know everyone wants to anticipate the situation and what will happen, everyone is thinking about when we will win the title. There is no doubt about John's ability to play in the team".

"That's why I insisted to start well and we did well in the first half".

Guardiola is still allowed to wear the ribbon before and after games and can even wear it on the touchline during Champions League matches, which he intends to do. "If Firmino is doing well, I'm happy for him".

Since the two Citizens' teams met - the one has struggled for results, the other silverware heavy already, and on an unbeaten run again.

Jesus might have to bide his time now, which would be frustrating for the Brazilian after his recent time out of the team with knee ligament damage and the fact that he will be looking to impress Brazil coach Tite with only three months to go before the World Cup in Russian Federation.

"They have showed that for months in all competitions".

"The draw has to go right".
