Google Maps to introduce Mario Kart mode to celebrate

National Mario Day is coming up and if you weren't sure how to celebrate, Nintendo is giving you an option by slashing the price of its mobile game Super Mario Run by 50%. The fun doesn't end on March 10, however, as the plumber will be available on the service for one week.

This week, though, Google is merging realities, and it starts today for Mar10 Day (get it?). You will then see a prompt to enable Mario Time! Tap that, and the navigation arrow is replaced with Mario riding around in a vehicle from Mario Kart.

"You'll need to install the newest version of the app for iPhone or Android-and then tap a yellow "?" icon-to unlock Mario's cameo. "He'll be a constant companion wherever you're driving this week-to work, to school, or the spaghetti house".

The Mario update has started rolling out to users globally-Android and iOS users.

Well, this is some interesting news that you may not see every day.

You will not, of course, be racing, as the last thing Google and Nintendo want to do is to encourage speeding and veering suddenly into various lanes of traffic.

As part of the working relationship with Starlight Children's Foundation, Nintendo will provide the latest designs for the foundation's Starlight Brave Gowns. This is just an animated Mario for March 10's "Mario Day", and your friends won't see your Mario on the streets of Sydney, not like they might see other Pokémon in Pokémon Go. If you say yes, Mario will become your position marker in the app.
