When clocks change for daylight saving, change smoke detector batteries

Test smoke alarms once a month.

"Working smoke alarms in your home are the most important step you can take to increase your family's chances of escaping a home fire", said state Fire Marshal Mike Haney.

Residents in Danbury can schedule a visit by visiting or by calling 877-287-3327 and choosing option 1 on the menu to request a smoke alarm installation. Install alarms on every level of the home. Check local building codes for additional requirements.

When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Windsor fire investigators are crediting working smoke alarms for alerting the six sleeping occupants of a house on Rankin Avenue that had a fire on Thursday morning.

"We just pulled some out of a home not too long ago and they were 17 years old".

Smoke alarms should not be installed near a windowbecause drafts could interfere with their operation.

Test alarms once a month using the test button. Replace the backup battery every year. If the alarm chirps, replace only the battery.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries.

This weekend, Daylight Saving Time begins.

Remember, even alarms that are hard-wired into your home electrical system need to have their battery back-ups maintained in case of electrical power outage. Then practice the plan at least two times a year.
