Mikaela Shiffrin wins 5th slalom globe in 6 seasons

Colorado's Mikaela Shiffrin won the overall World Cup title Friday - for the second year in a row.

Saturday's result stretched the American's lead over Vlhova in the slalom standings to 225 points with just the season-ending race at the World Cup finals in Sweden remaining.

The world cup victory was Shiffrin's 11th of the season, tying her career high for a single season, and her 17th time on the podium this season.

On Friday, she took third in the giant slalom at the German ski resort to retain her overall World Cup crystal globe in what she has described as "her incredible season".

For Shiffrin, Saturday's slalom title is her fifth in six years - an unmatched run of dominance that includes a gold medal in the event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Her nearest rival, Wendy Holdener of Switzerland, lost any hope of overhauling the United States star when she trailed in 14th on Friday.

"It was a pretty tight race, so it was not easy to go into the second run and think, 'Oh, yeah, I'm fine, ' and to just ski", Shiffrin said. Lindsey Vonn, who did not race this weekend but will be in Are, holds the record of 81 wins.

Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell won her 41st race aged 21 in 1975 before missing the following season to care for her father. "Hopefully, I'm not going to be feeling a lot of nerves (in Are) because there is not a lot of risk".

The race was won by Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway.

Ranked fourth after the opening run, the Olympic GS champion from the United States improved a spot and trailed victor Ragnhild Mowinckel by 0.74 seconds.

The win also moved her into a tie for 10th place on the all-time World Cup list and fifth on the women's list.

"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said.

He clocked 1:49.17 to beat World Cup series leader Beat Feuz of Switzerland by 0.08 seconds.
