Barcelona agree to terms to sign Brazilian footballer Arthur Melo

BARCELONA have agreed an option worth up to £34million to sign Arthur from Gremio in the summer.

The 21-year-old helped the Porto Alegre club to the final of the Copa Libertadores and put in an impressive performance in the second leg as they ran out 3-1 aggregate winners over Lanus of Argentina.

Barcelona look set to add Arthur to their ranks at the end of the season after agreeing an option to bring the midfielder to Camp Nou from Gremio.

Barcelona, who announced the news on their club website, can take up the option from July 2018 for an initial fee of €30m, with €9m in "variable amounts".

Barcelona have targeted a deal for the last few months and technical director Robert Fernandez has made numerous visits to Brazil in a bid to thrash out a deal with club and player.

This is a complicated transfer as Barcelona now do not have space to register any more non-EU players following the signings of Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and Yerry Mina. After the departure of Neymar in July Barcelona have signed Ousmane Dembélé, Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho.

However, the former Liverpool man has the option to take up Portuguese citizenship, which he qualifies for through his wife Aine.
