CBI seeks Karti's custody for six more days

CBI seeks Karti's custody for six more days

Th relief granted in the morning was, however, short-lived as Special CBI judge Sunil Rana in the afternoon allowed three more days of his CBI custody up to March 12 and posted hearing on his bail plea to March 15, asking the agency to file its reply by March 14.

During the three-day remand, the CBI will bring Karti face-to-face with his Chartered Accountant S Bhaskaraman from whose computer's the CBI had recovered details of payments to Karti's firms overseas.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, is being kept constantly under bright lights, not allowed to sleep and his health is not in a good condition in CBI custody, his counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi told a special court on Friday. Perusal of the list shows that "documents seized during the search either belong to Karti Chidambaram or his family members", said the CBI in its note.

Appearing for the CBI, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) said: "During the search operations, large number of voluminous records and documents were recovered having direct bearing with the offence under investigation...the accused has so far maintained that he is in no way concerned with Advantage Strategic Pvt Limited in spite of material showing direct nexus between the accused and the company".

The agency, during previous hearings, alleged that he was not cooperating in the probe and was evasive in responding even to routine questions by parroting that the case against him was politically motivated to target his father during whose tenure as the Union finance minister, the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance was granted to the INX Media group. Singhvi said the "so called" new fact in the form of address of Advantage Strategic Consulting was available on Google. But I ask myself what do common criminals do when released in one case and fear arrest in the other case.

He claimed in the court that during a raid conducted the day before yesterday at the Chennai office of Advantage Strategic Pvt Ltd, various incriminating documents were recovered.

"Its tragic for me (Karti)".

Meanwhile, CBI officials speaking to HT on the condition of anonymity, said that Karti was not cooperating in their investigation.

Singhvi said the CBI needed to rest its demand for extending the custody of his client on solid grounds.

Karti Chidambaram was confronted with Indrani Mukherjea in Mumbai last week.

Before commencing the proceedings on Karti, the court extended the judicial custody of his CA, S Bhaskararaman, till March 22.
