However, the attacker was not stopped, and the soldier was injured by the knife.

Police say an Austrian soldier shot dead a knife-wielding man who attacked him outside the Iranian ambassador's residence in Vienna. "He was only saved by a stab-proof vest", the spokesman said, adding that the two men ended up grappling on the ground.

He further pointed to his communication with the Iranian ambassador to Austria, noting that no damage has been inflicted on the residence of the envoy as the result of the attack.

The guard was wounded in the arm before he shot the 26-year-old attacker dead shortly before midnight on Sunday.

"He initially used pepper spray" against the assailant, Soeros said, before opening fire.

The motive of the attack remains unknown and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

He was believed to have fired his weapon at least four times.

Although the matter is still being investigated, Austria's Ministry of Defence said at the moment it seems the guard did follow the rules in his actions, the APA agency reported.

A 23-year-old Afghan national confessed to those assaults but denied any political motive.
