The New York Police Department identified the pilot as Richard Vance, 33.

The reason behind the crash appeared the turning of the fuel shutoff button, which might've been switched by one of the passenger's bags.

The charter service, Liberty Helicopters, has been involved in two other high-profile crashes in NY. "What do you do when you jump into a body of cold water, normally you get a cold water shock response and you want to take a breath". "They worked very quickly, as fast as they could", Mr Nigro said. "We don't have a great deal to report yet, but will provide regular updates".

An Argentine woman, Carla Vallejos Blanco, was also one of the victims.

This undated photo provided by Dallas Fire-Rescue shows Officer Brian McDaniel who died in a helicopter crash Sunday evening March 11, 2018, while on vacation in NY.

"Daniel was a treasured member of the YNYC Mixed Ensemble since 2008, serving on the board for eight years and taking over as its President in 2016 to lead the non-profit", the group wrote on its Facebook page.

"Despite his short tenure, hearts are heavy with grief", the department said in a statement.

Until recently, Cadigan had worked as an intern with the news site Business Insider, which in a statement described him as a "smart, talented, and ambitious young journalist". The two friends were both 26; they went to Texas' Bishop Lynch High School together and graduated in 2010. McDaniel flashed a thumbs up.

US Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY is expected to call for the FAA to suspend Liberty Helicopters' FAA operating certificate until their safety record and this crash are fully assessed, according to a press release from his office. "These agencies have asked us to respect the investigative process by referring all press inquiries to them for any further comment".

Video taken by a bystander showed the red helicopter descending slowly into the water, before listing on to its righthand side.

Eric Adams, from western Pennsylvania, was some of the last people to see the victims of the doomed helicopter flight alive.

"One of the most hard parts of the rescue were that five people were tightly harnessed", Nigro said. "It was under water".

Sen. Charles Schumer called on the FAA to issue an emergency order to force Liberty to cease until their safety record and the circumstances of the crash are fully investigated. Dihn-Zarr added that they planned to look into whether the Airbus Eurocopter had a history of mechanical problems.

Liberty Helicopters describes itself as "the largest and most experienced helicopter sightseeing and charter service in New York City". Three subsequent maintenance violations in 2011 and 2012 didn't result in any fines.

"The helicopter reportedly is inverted in the water".

A number of plane and helicopter crashes over New York City's East River and Hudson River have claimed lives in the past several years. Two of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were died later in hospital.

Of five, there were no surviving passengers after a chopper from the Liberty Helicopters company crashed into the East River on Sunday (Mar. 7).
