National Football League free agency rumors: Drew Brees staying with Saints

The guaranteed portion falls well below the likes of Matthew Stafford's and Derek Carr's monster deals, but it's reflective of a quarterback who's said he's OK with a year-to-year commitment as he winds down his illustrious career.

Now, he's becoming a free agent and has stated that he'd like to return to New Orleans and finish out his career there, but will it happen?

"I think that provides, certainly, the team with the most flexibility when it comes to being able to anticipate the future and the ability to acquire free agents and re-sign players on our existing roster that will build a championship team", Brees said.

Entering the 2018 National Football League season, Brees needs just 1,495 passing yards to become the NFL's All-Time passing yards leader, as he trails only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning.

"I love the opportunity that we have in front of us, and I'm excited to be back".

Brees will receive $27 million guaranteed in the first year, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints have finally come to an agreement on a contract extension.

Brees said his camp and the Saints were in constant contact over the past week, and while some fans might have panicked as negotiations lingered, Brees said he never anxious. "He'd be an even better fit now than he was when he first started with us". "And that's what we tried to do with the deal". "I've made it very clear from day one that I was always gonna be a New Orleans Saint as long as they would have me".

The free agency period officially gets underway on Wednesday, with Kirk Cousins, A.J. McCarron, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford among the more notable quarterbacks seeking new deals.

The 11-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 4,000 or more yards every season he has been with the Saints. Brett Favre also is ahead of Brees - for now - with 71, 838 yards and 508 TDs passing. Brees now has 70,445, which is just 1,495 behind Manning's standard.
