Now I Get It: Tillerson makes 20: High-profile White House departures

President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday and said he would nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him, putting an ardent foe of the Iran nuclear deal in charge of us diplomacy as Trump also dives into high-stakes talks with North Korea.

There's been another shakeup in President Trump's administration, and while it has been rumored and hinted at for months, the shock at the latest departure is no less resonant.

"I know Mike Pompeo from our time serving in the House of Representatives together and wish him the best of luck in this new and important role", Poliquin said. Trump tweeted, "He will do a fantastic job!" In a press briefing Tuesday, Trump praised the outgoing secretary of state but said Pompeo shared his way of thinking.

Tillerson had visited Nigeria on the last leg of his official visits to Africa, and met President Muhammadu Buhari, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest to both countries.

Scott Morrison says the government is looking forward to working with the new US Secretary of State.

Mr Tillerson was dismissed following months of speculation over the former ExxonMobil CEO's position.

In October, NBC news reported that Mr Tillerson called the president a "moron," something he never actually denied.

The agency also is under constant pressure from Trump to assess Iran's compliance with its nuclear commitments; Trump has repeatedly attacked the nuclear deal and sought evidence to support ending it. Last September, two months after Trump's decision, Tillerson said the USA would consider staying in the accord "under the right conditions".

Mr Trump has also nominated Gina Haspel to replace Mr Pompeo and become the first woman director of the Central Intelligence Agency. There was disagreement between the two over the Iran nuclear deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Syria, Russia, North Korea.

"I think it means that the likelihood of withdrawing from the agreement goes up, if you don't change the sunset clause and deal with some other deficiencies", Sen. "I wanted to either break it or do something, and he felt a little bit differently".

"I'm anxious to see if he sticks to the those views", Flake said Tuesday.

"Rex and I have been talking about this for a long time".

It also should move the White House to fill key vacancies at the State Department that Tillerson had no use for, and it should give Americas allies more confidence that greater weight is being placed on diplomacy in breaking the Korean impasse than on unpresidential taunts over who has the biggest nuclear button.

The personnel change comes ahead of a planned summit in the coming months between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un set to be the first-ever meeting between a sitting USA leader and a North Korean one.

Former Canadian diplomat Colin Robertson said Canada should reach out to Pompeo right away, to welcome him into his new role.

Russian Federation "has reasserted itself aggressively, invading and occupying Ukraine, threatening Europe, and doing nothing to aid in the destruction and defeat of ISIS", Pompeo said during his confirmation hearing in January of 2017.
