Pellegrino sacked: Southampton target Marco Silva as next manager

Southampton fired manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday in a bid to stop the team sliding out of the English Premier League.

The Coach was forced out after the club recorded just one win in 17 matches, a situation that leaves them just one point above relegation.

Hughes played more than 50 times for Southampton in the late 1990s and his appointment would end a run of four non-British managers after Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman, Puel and Pellegrino.

They are in the FA Cup quarter-finals but have five away games out of their last eight in the league.

It is believed Southampton aren't set to appoint Hughes imminently, while other candidates such as former Hull City and Watford manager Marco Silva, plus ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, aren't now in the running.

Former team-mate and arguably the club's greatest ever player Matt Le Tissier believes Hughes has what it takes to save Southampton from dropping into the Championship.

Hughes was sacked by Stoke in January with the team in the Premier League's relegation places.

"As you know, my period in Southampton has finished". The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me.

"For this reason, I would like to say sorry to our fans because we couldn't represent our club properly".

"Some moments we managed this, some moments we couldn't, but we have been living a hard season for many reasons".

Southampton have won only 1 of their last 17 matches, and their most recent outing was an incredibly underwhelming, 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James's Park.

He also spent two years at Southampton during 1998 and 2000 during his playing career.
