Bomb attack kills 9 near Pakistan's Lahore

Seven people were martyred and more than 20 others injured when a blast targeted police near Lahore, Samaa reported Wednesday.

Lahore and its surroundings have been targeted by multiple bomb and suicide attacks in recent years.

It was such a powerful blast that its sound was heard several kilometers from the site. At least 70,000 followers of Tablighi Jamaat were present at the annual congregation, who remained safe due to the sacrifices of policemen. Five others succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

Two sub-inspectors and three constables are among the dead while the injured include ASP and SHO Raiwind.

Emergency has been declared in Jinnah Hospital Lahore where injured are moved from the scene. Some of them are stated to be in critical condition, triggering fears that the death toll might go up.

"I can at the moment say that police was the target", he said. Police said they are investigating.

The rescue teams have reached the site.

Meanwhile, IG Punjab Captain (retd) Arif Nawaz Khan has directed to declare a security high alert in the province.

It was the first incident of such nature in Lahore this year.

Washington on Thursday offered a $5 million bounty for the Pakistani Taliban militant leader, Mulllah Fazlullah, a day after a suspected USA drone strike on a training camp in a remote part of Afghanistan killed his son and more than 20 other militants preparing to launch suicide attacks in Pakistan.

In his reaction, President Mamnoon Hussain said such cowardly acts could not deter the government's resolve to fight terrorism.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was quick to condemn the blast.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz prayed for the protection of policemen.

The police camp has been set up for the security of the annual congregation of Tableeghi Jamaat.
