Fired top diplomat Rex Tillerson says he's praying for America

Tillerson, whom Trump unceremoniously fired Tuesday, did not mention the president or his designated successor, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, in the message.

In the chaotic first year of Trump's administration - between manic tweets from the president, the firing of former FBI Director James Comey and many other unusual news coming from Washington - the State Department seemed like the eye of a hurricane. As for the new team that Mr Trump is assembling, he advises: "The president certainly values loyalty".

However, Trump emphatically rejected talk of chaos in his year-old administration as he nears a pivotal moment on the global stage with his planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"I've gotten to know a lot of people very well over the a year ago", Trump told reporters at the White House, "and I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want". In 2017, Mr. Trump appointed her as deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and now, with Mr. Pompeo's transition to the State Department, Ms. Haspel is poised to become the first female director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is a "no" vote on the president's pick for the next Secretary of State.

No doubt that was true, one prime example being the agreement to restrict Iran's nuclear efforts.

Iran was expected Friday to resist USA pressure to toughen the 2015 nuclear deal as time runs out to meet President Donald Trump's ultimatum to fix the accord by May 12. Trump has been highly critical of the worldwide nuclear agreement since his 2016 presidential campaign, calling it "the worst deal ever negotiated".

"We share all the concerns with the missiles, with the regional destabilisation, with the support to terrorism, with the malign activities of Iran", one European diplomat said.

In a scene described in a book written by one of the interrogators, the chief of base came to his cell and "congratulated him on the fine quality of his acting". Tillerson seemed at odds with both the White House on policy and the State Department bureaucracy.

Kelly was given the task of phoning Tillerson, who was in Africa, but the nature of their conversation was up for dispute. "We were told not to tweet it out, and just to wait". National security adviser H.R. McMaster, who has faced a barrage of attacks from right-wing media outlets, has never clicked with Trump, leading to speculation that he too may soon depart. Hours later, he was sacked, too.

Tuesday's announcement was anything but an isolated personnel move. The former oil executive said he would remain at the department until March 31 to conclude an administrative handover, but that Deputy Secretary John Sullivan would take charge.

As a former Middle East analyst at the State Department, though, I think the real drama of replacing America's top diplomat lies in the foreign policy implications.

Trump's tone in announcing the reshuffle was nearly that of an exultant commander picking his "war cabinet", though the challenges for now will be diplomatic.

Under the JCPOA, adopted on October 18, Iran surrendered much of its nuclear infrastructure and opened the rest to global inspection in exchange for worldwide sanctions relief. He had been recommended for the post by Condoleezza Rice and James Baker.

Trump is also set to meet several leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) over the coming months to discuss the possibility of establishing a GCC summit later this year under Washington's auspices, according to Reuters news agency. Her name was not made public at the time, because she was considered to be a covert agent.

The pair never developed a particularly warm relationship. Mr Trump offered an unconventional answer. Tillerson lost his job because for all his many faults, he wasn't a yes-man: He didn't flatter Trump's ego or back up his obviously wrong positions.

Three others who may be on the hot seat are Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Obama-era holdover David Shulkin. And if Pompeo did speak to Trump, he clearly did not dissuade him from taking the plunge and defying previous presidential convention by meeting with Kim. He received a law degree from Harvard Law School, and then worked in the private sector for a time before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2017, representing Kansas' 4th District.

"I think Dr. Shulkin has done a bang-up job", Roe said.
