Naxals led by local commanders attacked CRPF team: Top cop

The attack took place in Kistaram when the team of CRPF personnel of the 212 battalion was out on a combing operation on the MPV.

CRPF IGP Kamal Kant Sharma, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi, several police personnel and others also paid their homage to the martyr.

The injured CRPF personnel have been evacuated in a helicopter to Raipur.

It may be recalled that Naxals launched a dastardly attack on security forces in April previous year in the same District, killing 25 CRPF personnel. "People of the country hope that this will not be repeated and the Centre is alert over it", Ahir told reporters.

Security has been beefed up in and around Sukma District following the attack and in an effort to trace the Maoists who indulged in the attack.

Since 2005, at least 1,928 security personnel had been killed in Naxal-related violent incidents, most of which took place in Chhattisgarh, the leaders said.

However, Dinakaran said that when the commanding officier explained that Maoists could attack a second time, the Sukma S.P. chose to move without the CRPF's assistance.

Asked if it was intelligence failure on the part of CRPF, Dinakaran said: "No, it's not a matter of intelligence failure".

Road construction in Sukma, a Maoist hotbed in Chhattisgarh, has unsettled the rebels, leading them to frequently target security personnel in a bid to stop such projects, a state police official said. "Naxals know they can not take on us face to face any more so they are using bombs to target vehicles on road". "As the CO had apprehension of another attack by the Maoists, he chose to move some men in two MPVs so that they would not be hurt during the operation". Then, Maoists in a similar fashion had planted IEDs. The one used by the Maoists were assessed to have over 100 kg of explosives.
