Tom Crean to be hired as Georgia basketball coach

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweeted out that Crean will become the next head coach at the University of Georgia.

Crean spent the past year working as an analyst with ESPN after being dismissed from Indiana. After a 28-66 record in his first three seasons, in was 138-69 in his final six years, including Big Ten championships in 2013 and 2016.

"Make no mistake, this is a basketball program inside of a great university that can compete for championships doing it the right way", Crean said in a statement released by the university. He reached the Final Four with Marquette in 2003 and went to three Sweet Sixteen's at Indiana.

One look at Crean's resume underscores why multiple schools were reportedly interested in hiring him after he accumulated a 356-231 record at his previous two coaching stops. He made five NCAA tournament appearances with the Golden Eagles. "He's going to be a great fit for the University of Georgia", athletics director Greg McGarity said in a statement released by the school.

The hire was officially announced shortly after 9:00 p.m. ET on Thursday night.

Crean had a tremendous tenure at IN, taking them to the Sweet 16 three times and he took Marquette to the final four IN 2003.

Georgia has scheduled a Friday news conference to introduce Crean. The university fired Mark Fox, who was at the helm for nine seasons, last Saturday. Crean started his rounds in the coaching carousel by meeting with Pitt earlier this week to replace Kevin Stallings, but he left there without a deal. That leaves its most recent tournament win in 1997.
