Losses by UCLA, Arizona State make it a Pac-1 Tournament

"I've seen Buffalo play a little bit". Buffalo's ability to defend in the paint and to cause havoc outside in the passing lanes led to numerous Arizona turnovers on Thursday night. Harris and Clark used their quickness to combine for 27 first-half points, and the Wildcats went 1 for 8 from 3-point range to trail Buffalo 40-38.

Kentucky's young squad will try and end Buffalo's cinderella story when the teams face off at 5:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.

After making it into round one of the NCAA Tournament, they lost the first game to 13th team State University of NY at Buffalo 89 to 68.

The Bulls played fast and loose on offense, taking nearly half of their shots from 3-point range and hitting half of them (15 of 30), and morphed into a blue-collar, hard-hat squad on the defensive end, out-rebounding (32-31) an Arizona team that starts two 7-footers, taking charges, diving to the floor, and seemingly winning every 50-50 battle for the ball. And they've got players that come off the bench and give them a jolt defensively. You put your shoes on just the same way we do. "A well-coached team. A team that was tough".

"When I tell these guys - and again, I've done this in this tournament, I don't know, maybe 20 times, whatever it is, you can't look ahead because a lot of times you look ahead and the team you're anxious about doesn't even advance".

Wes Clark led the Bulls in scoring with 25 points, Jeremy Harris added 23 points in a game that saw the undersized team dominate on defense and shoot lights-out from behind the three-point line.

Oats admitted he was as surprised as everyone else at the margin of his team's win.

Although his coach is wary of the Bulls, Gabriel said the Wildcats won't be intimated by Buffalo's speed and quickness.

"I really felt like we were going to win this game", he said. They'll next play Loyola-Chicago on Saturday.

"We've got a mature group of kids", he said.

The Bulls lost to Cincinnati by six on a neutral court in the Cayman Islands. The Wildcats were able to beat Texas A&M and Alabama in Tucson before conference play.

Does the running, gunning University at Buffalo basketball team have enough offense to shock the world for the second time in three days in the NCAA Tournament? Buffalo, from top to bottom, played an exceptional game and deserved to win. Ayton's dominance in Las Vegas included 32 points and 14 rebounds in a semifinal win over UCLA followed by 32 points and 18 rebounds a day later in a victory against USC in the championship game.

This column was supposed to be about how those idiots on the NCAA Tournament Selection committee set up a scenario when two of the most athletic, talented teams in the field were meeting in the second round, at least one round too soon.

Inside Buffalo's locker room hung a handwritten sign with two words: Ball Pressure. This time, they were held to 28.

"We're playing like we have nothing to lose", the Kentucky coach said.
