$9.5 million for space hotel stay

The hotel will accommodate up to four travellers and two crew members at a time, racing them around the planet at high speeds for 12 days, the company said in a news release. It plans to welcome its first guests in 2022.

The company reports in a Thursday blog post that if the Aurora Station's demand grows, it will sell condo space that can be used to either visit, sublease or "one day live in as you wish".

"Every 90 minutes we complete an orbit, meaning you'll see day and night over Earth hundreds of times during your 12-day stay, with ample opportunity to photograph your hometown from space".

Aurora Station, billed as the "first luxury hotel in space", may be for you.

The Aurora Station, described as the "first luxury hotel in space", is pencilled in for launch in 2021, opening up to guests a year later.

Those keen to take part and with a few quid to spare can already put down an $80,000 (£57,129) deposit online in a bid to secure a place, but Mr Bunger - who set up Orion Span to "build and sustain human communities in space" - said there was more to the project than providing a unique holiday destination. On return to Earth, guests will be treated to a hero's welcome home.

"We want to get people into space because it's the final frontier for our civilization", said Orion Span CEO Frank Bunger, who says the experience is geared towards wannabe astronauts with money to burn.

There's been innovation around the architecture to make it more modular and more simple to use and have more automation, so we don't have to have EVAs (extravehicular activities) or spacewalks.
The launch of Elon Musk's Falcon Heavy from the Kennedy Space Center in February, for example, was the latest in a series of milestones that have renewed companies' interest in space. Van Espahbodi, managing partner of Starburst Accelerator LLC, a consulting and venture firm, added that the public-relations push behind Orion Span may be an effective way to help the company attract funding, too.

Before taking off, guests are required to complete a three-month training course online and at the Orion Span facility in Houston. According to a survey, the hefty amount is less than half of what space tourists have paid in the past.

There is, as you'd imagine, a slight catch when it comes to the price tag.

However, Bunger says that Aurora Station "has multiple uses beyond serving as a hotel". "We support a range of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions, including, In Situ Manufacturing, Microgravity Research, Space Hardware Validation, and more", the company said.
