Darts Legend Eric Bristow Dies at Age 60

The five time world darts champ died yesterday aged 60 following a heart attack.

The British darts champion Eric Bristow has died, the sport's United Kingdom governing body announced Thursday night.

The five-time world darts champion was described as a "true legend in the game" by current king of the oche Michael van Gerwen while fans at Liverpool's Echo Arena, where Bristow had been for a Premier League Darts night, immediately and repeatedly paid tribute in song as they heard the news yesterday.

Bristow also won five World Masters titles and was a founder player when the PDC was formed in 1993. He was the first superstar of darts, an unbelievable player but also a massive character.

"He understood what crowds wanted to see - he was controversial, he was a maverick, he spoke his mind and upset a few people from time to time, but the man in the street warmed to him because he was very much one of theirs". "The PDC, and the sport of darts, will miss him".

I am lost for words and really devastated!

"What he's done for our game, tonight, if it wasn't for Eric, no one would be here tonight".

Taylor went on to defeat Bristow in the 1990 World Championship final, while a 6-0 defeat to Dennis Priestley the following year proved to be his last appearance in a televised final.

Keith Deller beat Bristow in the 1983 BDO World Championship final in what was one of the tournament's biggest shocks. My thought are with his family at this sad time.

Nigel Pearson, sports broadcaster and writer from Wombourne, who worked alongside Bristow also shared his tribute to the 60-year-old.

Ricky added: "I'm into my darts, but he was unrecognisable".

Bristow is survived by two adult children, Louise and James.

The Australian outback was a change from his usual holiday haunts of Tenerife and Las Vegas but he charmed viewers sufficiently to finish fourth in the show, striking up an unlikely bond with Made in Chelsea's Hugo Taylor along the way.
