9 policemen, pregnant woman, 13 others killed during Offa robbery

A gang of gunmen raided the vaults of at least two commercial banks and opened fire at a police station in the city of Offa in Kwara State on Thursday, before fleeing the scene in their convoy with an undisclosed haul of cash.

Despite reactions from many quarters, the President Muhammadu Buhari administration failed to officially speak on the incident until now.

SD the police intensify efforts toward apprehending attackers of Offa community in the recent robbery saga, the Commissioner of Police on the state, CP Lawan Ado, on Saturday said seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidence.

Nine police officers were among those killed.

"We all must co-operate at various levels to increase the security of our communities".

In the statement, he said, "Yesterday's savage attack on unsuspecting citizens and establishments in Offa LGA, that led to significant loss of lives and injury is a despicable act committed by cruel individuals".

After the operation, which lasted for about an hour, the robbers fled Offa through Igosun community.

People that were injured during the course of the robbery were taken to the Offa General Hospital.


Spokesman of the state Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident on Thursday.

"We have also deployed more of our men to Offa while investigation is ongoing". From the faces I saw, they are girls and boys between 18 and 22 years of age, " he said.

The report quoted a witness as saying that he saw the corpses of six policemen after the robbery operation and that the robbers made away with millions of naira after shattering bank buildings, terrorising workers, customers and passersby, as well as traders and other people in the vicinity. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died in the attack.

"I have also directed the department in charge of health services to rapidly treat those injured in the attack".

The governor, who went round the wards to meet with the victims, described the incident as unfortunate, while praying to God to grant the injured victims quick recovery.

Residents of Offa town have described the Thursday attack as a bloody one.

In his twitter handle, Dr Mimiko said "the Offa "armed robbery" was most likely a terrorist attack".
