First varsity softball game comes to stadium

After losing earlier in the day on a Charter School of Wilmington 2-out, 2-run single in the bottom of the 7th, Indian River cut it even tighter.

The Cougars dropped their first two games of the tournament in lopsided fashion, 11-2 to Swansboro on Tuesday and 9-1 to host Richlands on Monday. Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Caitlin Hughes.

Roney went 3-for-3, including a double, with an RBI. Jenna Lenko went 2 for 2 with a double, and Natalie Ampole hit a triple.

The Wildcats got a career-high three RBI from freshman Mallory Peyton, who knows how much this game means, being from Madisonville. Junior Megan Hensley led Louisville at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.

She went five innings with only two hits and four strikeouts while allowing two walks.

"The Lady Jackets scored 10 of their runs in the first inning and added six more in the second to bring the 15-run rule into play".

Standout shortstop Rylie Maddox returns for her senior season, as does All-Loganland second baseman and leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Malchow, who hit.457 and finished fourth in the state in runs scored with 52. DeLeon would move Holmes over to third with a single to center field before A. Meagher would hit a 2 RBI double to center field.

The Cardinals (8-3-1) got three of their four runs in the fifth inning to hand the Indians (9-3) an opening-round loss. DeLeon and Holmes were the only two Dolphins to record a pair of hits as Holmes went 2-for-3 while DeLeon went 2-for-4. That one inning, with that big home run, that was kind of a letdown.

Sterling Williams, Sierra Ward and Dahlia Soto-Kanui each had a run and an RBI. Peyton drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the second inning before breaking open the game in the fifth with a two-run single.

Tina Furtado was two-of-three at the plate with one RBI. Sara Raubertas added a double. Merrill would get one more run across in the seventh inning to take a one run lead into the bottom half of the last inning. She is good in the circle, but she made two throwing errors in that first inning that didn't help her cause out. She started 16 of the Warriors' 27 games a year ago and went 12-4 with a 1.87 ERA.

Russian Federation senior pitcher Grace Saunders, who was a first team all-SCAL selection previous year, had seven strikeouts and was 3 for 3 at the plate with 5 RBIs and two walks. Castorena and Heidi Dobbs pitched two innings each and gave up a total of four hits. Kari Holzritcher and Morgan Taylor combined for the no-hitter in Game 2. Tori (Freire) had the two run triple up the first base line and that was nice base running actually.

Riley Osborn hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the ninth to give the Rockets an 8-7 lead.
