Steve Spurrier will coach new Orlando pro football team

"We don't have a minor league of professional football", Spurrier said on CBS.

"Co-founder and CEO of the Alliance, Charlie Ebersol said in a statement, we're not just bringing professional football to town, we're bringing the Head Ball Coach with us, a true Florida legend". The league plans to have eight teams and will play a 12-week season February 9, 2019, and will be broadcast on CBS.

"What first captured my attention was Charlie and Bill's commitment to putting top-flight, professional football on the field and creating a true alliance between fans, players and the game".

While his greatest accolades may have come in college, where he left both Florida and SC as those programs' winningest head coach and all but ushered the modern passing game into the SEC, Spurrier first made a football name for himself playing his way into the NFL, then coaching in the pros. One regular-season Alliance game will air exclusively on CBS Sports Network each week as well. The first game and the championship game will be carried by CBS. If not, the other team has the ball in prime field position.

"It's a fine line between who makes a team and who doesn't in the NFL".

The league will have eight teams in eight cities. "Those players get a chance to continue playing even if they don't play at the highest level, and then maybe someday they play well enough to go to the highest level". "Player safety, that's top priority". Advisers to the league also will include former NFL players Hines Ward and Justin Tuck.

Spurrier, the former Florida and SC head coach who up and quit coaching in 2015, has since had a role within UF's athletic department, which the Gators say will continue. I mean, that's something we want to bring to our league. The new team, which has yet to be named, will play at University of Florida's Spectrum Stadium. He was 86-49 with the Gamecocks from 2005-2015 and led the team to an SEC East title and three consecutive 11-win seasons. Season-ticket seat deposits will go on sale beginning at 4 p.m. April 17 at aaf.com.
