Bill Cosby's retrial begins

Bill Cosby's retrial begins

Constand, who is more than three decades younger than Cosby, didn't report the alleged assault until a year later. "When I say to the best of her ability, make sure you consider those pills and that glass of wine because then he [Cosby] helped her to a sofa".

The case boils down to he said, she said.

Mr Cosby has been charged with aggravated indecent assault, a second degree felony, by the Pennsylvania prosecutor. The trial is expected to last about a month in total.

Her lawyer, Gloria Allred, declined comment. The performer, once known as "America's dad", stands accused of sexual assault.

"He used words to try to encourage her to drink some", Steele said.

Getting her start as a child actress, she first appeared on the children's television program Shining Time Station from 1989 to 1991. Cosby's lawyers want the juror removed from the case.

District Attorney Kevin Steele reportedly focused on the payment during his opening statement, apparently trying to suggest that Cosby wouldn't have paid so much money unless the accusations had some truth to them.

According to their arrangement, they would have to keep quiet about the substance of the allegations, but also about the price of that pact - the settlement that Cosby's accuser, Andrea Constand, received to end her lawsuit against the legendary comedian.

The settlement amount had been confidential - and was kept out of the first trial - but a judge ruled that both sides could discuss it at this one.

Cosby is charged with drugging and molesting Constand at his home in 2004. The case was declared a mistrial previous year after the jury failed to reach a verdict following six days of deliberation.

Nicolle Rochelle, an actress who appeared on "The Cosby Show" as a 12-year-old, leaped into the path of the aging comedian as he was walking up to the courthouse. On the same day of the retrial she took a photo of herself in front of the house that was used as the exterior of The Cosby Show in New York City. Several heavily armed sheriff's deputies wrestled her into a bush and cuffed her. She was later released. She belongs to Femen, which is an global feminist group that was founded in the Ukraine in 2009.

Femen are a group of women who protest against sexual assault and in favor of women's rights while topless.

Bill Cosby paid almost $3.4 million to the woman he is charged with sexually assaulting, a prosecutor revealed to jurors Monday, answering one of the biggest questions surrounding the case as the comedian's retrial got underway. She was quickly detained.

Topless protest: semi-naked woman attacked bill Cosby

The global women's movement Femen claimed responsibility for organising the protest, saying Ms Rochelle was one of its activists.

Bill Cosby arrives at the Montgomery County Courthouse before jury selection in his sexual assault retrial April 2, 2018 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The group has staged protests in Ukraine and Russian Federation, appearing topless to protest abuses against women.

In a twist, the judge hinted that he might not allow jurors to hear Cosby's lurid deposition testimony about giving quaaludes to women before sex.

Judge Steven O'Neill declared a mistrial.

The defense has also moved to strike one juror from the trial for being allegedly overheard saying: "I just think he's guilty, so we can all be done and get out of here".

"I wanted to get as close to him as possible without touching him", she said. According to Cosby, all the sexual contacts were consensual.

She was among about a half dozen people chanting in support of Cosby's accuser.

Referring to the unsealed deposition, Steele on Monday told jurors, "That, ladies and gentlemen, led to our office reopening the investigation".

Bill Cosby's sexual assault retrial likely won't be anything like his first one.

Openings began at 3:26 p.m. and the trial broke by 5 p.m.

Cosby, who has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his Pennsylvania home in 2004, is thought to have walked back to his vehicle to let the commotion die down before heading back out.

Cosby is fighting back with a new, high-profile lawyer and an aggressive strategy.

Cosby is starting the re-trial for allegations that he sexually assaulted Andrea Constand after the first trial ended in a hung jury.
