Asia Cup 2018 set to be played in UAE

Asia Cup 2018 set to be played in UAE

India was supposed to host the 2018 Asia Cup, but now has lost the rights to stage the multi-team event after its reluctance to host Pakistan. The BCCI has got a clearance that they can play Pakistan at a neutral venue. "Obviously BCCI will be paying the Emirates Cricket Board a facilitation fee", the official further informed.

The 2018 edition will be the 14th Asia Cup. While it is a given for ICC tournaments, Asia Cup being an ACC tournament needed a government approval. Ironically though, the UAE has had been Pakistan cricket's adopted home for worldwide matches since 2009, following the terrorists attack on touring Sri Lanka cricketers in Lahore.

The same format will be followed this year as well when Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan take on each other alongside a sixth team. Earlier, there were rumors that the cup could be held in Sri Lanka if neither Pakistan nor India agree to visit each other.

The UAE Asia Cup will be a six-team affair. The tournament will be played between September 13 and 28, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The final of the Emergent Trophy will be played in Sri Lanka and the matches involving Pakistan and India will be played at their respective home grounds. The new itinerary will be announced shortly.

He agreed that in the current scenario, chances of hosting Pakistan was next to nil.

Najam Sethi, PCB's chairman, spoke to ESPNCricinfo and conceded that the reason for the shift is due to the political turmoil that is now affecting India and Pakistan.

In addition to all these decisions, Pakistan will play hosts to the next ACC Annual General Meeting which is set to be held later this year. The PCB in turn spoke about not sending their team for the Asia Cup in India. Last year, the PCB had sent a legal notice to its Indian counterpart, alleging contract breach and seeking compensation.
