Donnie Yen To Star In Disney's Live Action 'Mulan'

Donnie Yen To Star In Disney's Live Action 'Mulan'

First Deadline reported yesterday Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) was cast in the movie and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Jet Li (The Expendables), Gong Li (Ana) and Xana Tang (Filthy Rich) have joined the film as well.

Jet is set to star as the emperor of China, who orders the mobilization of troops via the conscription of one male from each household, while Gong will take on the villainous role of a powerful witch. The New Zealand-based starlet will portray Mulan's sister, a character not seen in the animated film but created specifically for the live-action refresh. Disney's Mulan gave us Shan Yu, a ruthless - but not particularly multifaceted - leader of the Huns as an antagonist.

Disney's adding more star power to Mulan with the additions of Jet Li and Gong Li.

Yen will play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan. Other films on her resumé include Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, Wayne Wang's Chinese Box and in Hollywood films Memoirs of a Geisha, Miami Vice and Hannibal Rising. Do you like the stars chosen and Disney live-action reboots?

Jet Li has flirted with success in North America and the worldwide action scene over the years.

The film will be directed by Niki Caro with Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner producing. I haven't seen a single casting yet, and these are conversations that are all ongoing.

Mulan is yet another live-action remake for Disney, who have fully embraced the idea of dipping into their vault and dusting off their classics. While I'm not a fan of live-action reboots, the Beauty and the Beast one was wonderful.

Mulan is now set to hit theaters on March 27, 2020.
